Antibody as 'smart bomb' to fight cancer

A joint team of Indian and Australian scientists claims to have achieved a breakthrough by creating an antibody which could be used for developing a "medical smart bomb" that would help seek out and eradicate the root of cancer — the stem cells.

The international project is a collaboration between Australia's Deakin University and Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore along with Barwon Health's Andrew Love Cancer Centre and Chem Genex Pharmaceuticals.

The team has, in fact, created the world's first RNA aptamer, a chemical antibody that acts like a guided missile to seek out and bind only to cancer stem cells, the Cancer Science journal reported.

The aptamer has the potential to deliver drugs directly to the stem cells and to be used to develop a more effective cancer imaging system for early detection of the disease, say the scientists. The Director of Deakin Medical School's Nanomedicine Program , Professor Wei Duan, said that the development of the aptamer had huge implications for the way cancer is detected and then treated.

Duan said: "The survival rates for many cancers remain poor, due partly to the inability to detect cancer early. To provide a cure for cancer we must accurately detect and eliminate the cancer stem cells."

Microsoft to plan beyond Qualcomm

Microsoft Corp plans to open its mobile platform to other chipset suppliers beyond Qualcomm Inc as takeup of its offering grows, a company official told Reuters.

"Adding support to new hardware ... is absolutely part of our strategy," Greg Sullivan, a senior product manager at Microsoft, said in an interview on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona.

Last week Microsoft signed a deal with Nokia Oyj to put Windows Phone software on the Finnish firm's smartphones. The first Nokia Windows phones are expected to reach the market at the earliest late this year.

Several key smartphone makers have unveiled Windows Phone models, but Microsoft controlled only 2 per cent of the smartphone market in the last quarter. Nokia had a smartphone market share of around 30 per cent.

Qualcomm's smaller rival ST-Ericsson, a venture of STMicroelectronics and Ericsson, said that it was focusing strongly on Microsoft's platform to deliver chips and will be ready when Nokia ramps up production of new Windows phones.

"Now everything has changed. The environment is different," ST-Ericsson Chief Executive Gilles Delfassy said in an interview, adding he does not see Qualcomm's exclusive deal prevailing.

ST-Ericsson will be ready to offer Windows Phone chipsets when Nokia ramps up production of its new range of Microsoft phones, Delfassy said.

Williams Financial Group analyst Cody Acree said being only on Qualcomm would likely stifle the competitiveness of Windows phones.

"If you only have a single source there's no pricing competition. If you want the best phones with the best prices you're going to want more than one supplier," Acree said.

ST-Ericsson is a key supplier to Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung Electronics, and Delfassy said more major customers were to be announced later this year.

A GLOBAL RISK

One of the key global risks that we face is economic disparity, and it was high on the agenda at the World Economic Forum 2011. A reason for rising economic disparity is the failure of education systems to keep pace with the increasing demands of the workplace. What is your view?

It is widely understood that education is key to advancing and sustaining economic vitality, and there is ample evidence to support this. The question of how education systems are able to respond to this is quite complex, however, and the way in which this challenge arises varies across and even within nations.

There are situations in which educational infrastructure is not adequate, others in which it may be adequate but the culture does not adequately focus on the importance of education. There may be inadequate investment to sustain educational structures because of an unwillingness of the public or government to recognise the long-term importance of this investment, and in other cases there can be massive investment but it will simply take time for the fruits of this investment to be realised.

In some nations higher education is outstanding but primary and secondary school education not as strong, and in some cases the converse is the situation. And there are many, many more such variations. The result of this is that we must recognise the importance of education, but likewise recognise that the challenges of realising a full and vital educational system will vary across countries and regions.

The challenge of reducing disparities can be tackled by investing in universal education. What is the role that universities can play to meet the challenge?

Universities are a key component of higher education. With respect to primary and secondary schooling, universities can also play a key role. Universities are almost uniquely positioned to bring a high level of analytic analysis to the many issues that arise in primary and secondary education—from the way in which assessments are used in the classroom, to the nature of school education systems, to the effectiveness of curricula, and more.

This analytic capability can be both enhanced and brought to even better use when the universities themselves participate in operating some schools. Similarly, universities train teachers, and the more this training is based on analytic work the more effective it will be. We have implemented a multi-faceted and ambitious approach to school education at the Urban Education Institute of the University of Chicago and some of this work is being emulated more broadly.

Obviously, we cannot by ourselves address all the issues of school education in Chicago, nor should universities more generally be expected to do this in their own locales. But our experience has shown that universities have a major contribution to make that can be informative to the work of others as well.

Rs 50 Exercise

An idea often does not get converted into a product or a business proposition unless it is guided to blossom into an enterprise. With this in mind, the National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN) recently focussed on the theme, 'India: Opportunities Within,' which involved students and organisations.

This year, the initiative was introduced in schools, thus creating an opportunity to introduce students to entrepreneurship skills by running an exercise called the 'Rs 50 Exercise.' The exercise, which originated at Stanford University, has been adapted to work for students aged between seven and 12 years.

Laura Parkin, executive director, NEN, points out, "In India, only 16% of students enrol in college. So if we are to ensure that this generation has the skills required to capitalise on today's opportunities, we will have to find a way to introduce entrepreneurship education at the school level."

The game has been adapted for students with simulated currency. In a class of around 50, students are grouped into teams of eight and given Rs 50 as initial investment. The teams are expected to start a virtual company and come up with a product or service with the initial investment that they can sell and make a profit on.

Ajay PV, E-Leader, E-Cell (NEN Entrepreneurship Cell), National Institute of Engineering, Mysore, explains, "It is a business game that is designed to teach students the basics of entrepreneurship such as marketing, making investment decisions, managing cash flow." He further adds, "We have conducted this game across a cross-section of schools both— private and government."

Be proud to be an Indion

As Albert Einstein say  :
"We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made".
Not too many countries can say that their civilization made great contributions to the world. Most societies in ancient times excelled in art work and literature. But India with its failure to maintain a unified empire, still excelled in many areas. Some of their greatest achievements are; art, sculpture, mathematics, science and religion. Not only did they achieve these great things, but they also introduced games that we play today. India has made tremendous contributions to the world we live in today.
People have been living in India for thousands of years.
You can start to see why India is so amazing. While other civilaliations make minimal to no contributions, India stands out above them all. India and its people are so amazing and very smart. Who would have thought
about astrology back then? One would think that they would be thinking about feeding their people, and raising their children, and yet at the same time they were.
One might think that games like that of Chess, snakes and ladders, polo, playing cards and martial arts were all invented in either China or American right? Wrong! Actually there is evidence that all of these games were played in India, and strongly suggest that they may have been invented here.
The world we know changes rapidly from day to day. Each day brings new advances in scientific technology, medicine, transportation, communication and even the way we prepare or foods and the way we dress. In spite of all the changes, India's past continues to weigh in the present day. In the way they think, worship, work, play, in their marriage customs and relationships with friends. The way that they lived 4,000 years ago; does not seem to have changed much over the course of time. Numerous races and tribes, bearing different religious ideas, customs and practices, have made their contributions and helped shape the culture of India that we know today. The differences in skin color, in the style of they way they dressed and in the language they spoke, and religious practices provide telltale evidence of the mingling of widely differing races and tribes.
Here are some interesting statistics about Indians today. These statistics are of the total percentages of Indians in America today that hold high ranking jobs in America.
• "There are about 3.22 million Indians in America.
• 38 % of Doctors are Indians.
• 12 % of Scientists are Indians
• 36 % of NASA employees are Indians
• 34 % of Microsoft employees are Indians
• 28 % of IBM employees are Indians
• 17 % of Intel Employees are Indians
• 13 % of Xerox employees are Indians
• 23 % of Indian community in America possesses a Green Card."
India is a very cultural place. They have contributed a lot to the world that we know today. They are incredible and smart people, who are satisfied by the life they were given. This cannot be said for those that are in poverty in America. Once people in American get to the poverty line or below, they give up, and become angry. They are obviously not as spiritual endowed as the Indians. Maybe the Indians are right about life after death. I strongly believe that if you do well, and try to help those in need, then you will be given a much better life next time around. This is not saying that I am a Hindu or Buddhism believer, but in some strange way I think that almost everyone believes in a life after death. That's why we go to church and ask for forgiveness for our sins. So at some level we all believe in doing good and trying to get into a better life or even through the gates to heaven; rather then the gates of hell.

Real time application is the need of the hour

Flash platform ecosystem in India has seen spectacular growth in the last 3 years. Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) are the future of web applications. In the web 2.0 and RIA ecology, user requirements now require real-time information to be feed to the application. The next generation of cloud applications is also going to be RIA based, incorporating the interactivity and responsiveness you expect from a desktop application. Understanding the need of the hour Adobe organized a platform to enlighten the developers and designers.

Shunji Hu, RIA developer, Singapore Flex user group at Adobe flash platform submit 2010 said that we can achieve real-time application using a variety of technology like Adobe Stratus 2.0 (RTMFP) and other open standards like XMPP.

If you have a socket server it is very easy to incorporate all these technologies into contemporary social media application including chat and video conferencing. He also tried to enlighten the participants on both the client and server side of the technology and see how we can achieve a lightweight and responsive real time application.

Today, browser and rich web technologies such as AJAX, DHTML, Mashups and Web 2.0 are making money and gaining market-share for some of the leading businesses in the world. Along with it the customer needs are changing and there is an increased demand for real time information. Adobe Flash Platform has fuelled this revolution with an integrated set of technologies for delivering the most compelling applications, content and video to the widest possible audience.

Now, make phone calls from your Gmail account

Google will now facilitate Gmail users to call telephones directly from their email. It will be in direct competition with Skype and traditional operators like AT&T and Verizon Communications.

After offering computer-to-computer voice and video chat services, Google will now allow calls to home phones and mobile phones directly from Gmail. Calls to the U.S. and Canadian phones from Gmail would be free of cost this year and for calls to other countries, there would be certain charges fixed at a lower rate. Google said calls to Britain, France, Germany, China and Japan would be as low as 2 cents per minute.

According to analysts, this service would likely be a bigger competitive threat to services like Skype's than to traditional phone companies, which have already been cutting their call prices in recent years in response to stiff competition.

"This is a risk to Skype. It's a competitor with a pretty good brand name," said Hudson Square analyst Todd Rethemeier. Like Skype, Rethemeier said the Google service will likely be much more popular among U.S. consumers making international calls, than among people calling friends inside the country.
